WARD MELVILLE 18      WALT WHITMAN 3

May 27, 1999

The Ward Melville Patriots opened the 1999 playoff season with a well executed victory over an overmatched Walt Whitman team today.  The atmosphere was festive, green and yellow balloons everywhere, and the players were well nourished thanks to a volunteer breakfast.  The weather was incredible and the fans were able to relax and enjoy this game.

From the opening face-off, the Patriots were in complete control.  They seemed determined to play a team oriented lacrosse and execute their style of play throughout the game.  This was evident by the 10 different Patriots who scored goals today. Brendan Morgan (2g/1a) began the scoring with a shot from the crease on a pretty assist from Derrick Preuss. Will Passavia (2g/1a) scored moments later on a feed from Matt Monfett (3g/4a). The remainder of the first quarter saw four more goals and Melville was ahead 6-1 as the quarter ended.

The domination continued in the second quarter. The lines began mixing five minutes into the second with good results. Melville has depth and focus. All the lines showed their talent and grit as they worked against Whitman's first team. (Tune in later for the complete story).

The post season is here and there is only one goal for everyone........State Championship.  This team knows it's one game at a time. No free passes. Every game from now on will be a contest that will be fought to the last second on the clock. Guts, determination, and teamwork = Patriot's green and gold all the way to Coyne Field.

Keep working hard. Go Patriots!!
