WARD MELVILLE  17 COMMACK  2

5/24/01

The two-time defending NYS Champion Ward Melville Patriots “caged” the Commack Cougars with a dominating 17-2 victory in the opening round of the Suffolk County Playoffs.  Melville was able to utilize the majority of its squad, gaining confidence and valuable playoff experience for its “young bloods.”

Melville’s offense was well balanced today with 9 players scoring.  Senior All-County Midfielder Nick Miaritis led the Patriots in scoring with 5 goals.

Melville’s defense unit of Senior All-County Goalie Nick Gentilesco, long poles Senior All-American Ryan Kelaher, Senior All-County Jay Rapisarda, Junior All-Division Doug Seale and Junior All-Division Thomas Theodorakis, kept the Cougars from ever getting near Gentilesco, who only had to make 3 saves through 3 periods of play.

The first period opened with Sophomore “Rookie of the Year”, All-Division Dave Schwartzberg scoring unassisted at 11:31.  Miaritis scored goals 2 and 4; Senior 3-time All-American Matt Monfett scored goals 3 and 5. Senior All-Division Billy Jautze assisted on goals 4 and 5.  Commack’s #9 scored at 7:19, with an assist from #5 to make the score 3-1 Melville.    At the end of the first quarter the score was 5-1 Melville.

Melville added 4 more goals in the second quarter with two more by Miaritis and 2 goals by Junior Attackman Peter Kaspar, making the score 9-1 at the half.

Melville scored two minutes into the third on an unassisted goal by Junior Midfielder John Keysor.  Commack answered back 1 minute later with #9’s second goal, their last of the day.  Miaritis put in his fifth goal for an 11-2 score at 8:21 of the 3rd.  Schwartzberg, Senior Midfileder Craig Middleton and Senior Defenseman Ryan Kelaher each put one in the back of the cage to make the score 14-2 at the end of the 3 periods of play.

The 4th quarter saw the Patriots add 3 more, with Senior Attackman Nick Searle “going on a tear,” scoring two in a row and Senior Midfielder Joey Maehr scoring at 1:44 remaining, to make the final score 17-2.

The Melville families wish to thank Coach Cuozzo, Martens, and Hoppey for their tribute to the Senior players and their families, on the occasion of the Senior’s last home game of their high school careers.

We also wish to congratulate this year’s Ward Melville Patriot Suffolk County Lacrosse Award Winners: All- American Players Matt Monfett and Ryan Kelaher; All-County Players Nick Miaritis, Nick Gentilesco, Jason Rapisarda and Shane Ferraro; All-Division Players Billy Jautze, Doug Seale, Thomas Theodorakis and Dave Schwartzberg. Dave Schwartzberg also received “Rookie of the Year” honors and Nick Miaritis was awarded the prestigious “Ray Enners Award” for his contributions to the game, both on and off the field.

The Patriots continue their quest for a “3-peat” as NYS Champions on Tues., May 29 at King Park in the Suffolk County Semi-Finals.  Game time will be announced at either 3 or 5pm.

  GO PATRIOTS!
