Pats Go 3-0 with 11-6 Win Over

After a slow start giving up two unanswered goals in the first quarter, Ward Melville took control of the game in the third quarter of play to win against the Colonials of William Floyd 11 – 6 at the Patriots home field. In the second half, the Patriots played a more aggressive defense, controlled ground balls, and asserted more physical checking to seal the win.  

The 1^st quarter was controlled by WF and ended with the Colonials shutting down the Patriots 2 – 0, but senior attackman Peter Kasper answered with two consecutive goals at the start of the 2^nd quarter and the junior attackman David Schwartzberg added another assisted by senior midfielder John Keysor. A fourth WM goal was added by junior midfielder Ryan Preuss from behind the cage unassisted. A late WF goal ended the 1^st half with the score WM 4 WF 3, a tight game.  

The 3^rd quarter started with junior midfielder Michael Ward winning the face-off and Kasper feeding Schwartzberg for a bounce shot 5^th goal for the Patriots. Kasper and Matsui found the back of the net for two more and Melville widened the lead to 7 – 3.

Floyd picked up the last goal of the quarter which ended with the Patriots leading 7 – 4.  

The 4^th period started with each team scoring in man-up situations, WF scored twice and WM once. The Patriots defense solidly led by seniors Thomas Theodorakis and Doug Seale crunched down on the Colonials which paved the way for four more goals for Ward Melville. Senior midfielder Jordan Funt fired an outstanding assist to Schwartzberg followed by a Keysor to Schwartzberg combination. Ryan Preuss added another unassisted goal for WM’s 11^th and final score of the afternoon. Junior goalie Shane Brennan took over for senior Ricky Freud and made a point blank save late in the game to preserve the win for Ward Melville for a final score of 11 - 6.
