WARD
MELVILLE 10 SMITHTOWN 7
One of the rules of competition is 'never underestimate your opponent'.
Smithtown is never a team to be taken lightly and they reminded everyone
of that today. Scoring first, the Bulls enjoyed their only lead of the
day. But...they pulled even at two and when Melville started to run,
they closed the gap to 8-6 at the break. The third period was
characterized by tough defense on both sides and no goals scored. This
was a typical scenario last year but has not been the norm in the early
going this year. The Pats pulled ahead by four at 10-6 and held that
until a late tally by the Bulls with less than one minute left on the
clock.
Smithtown is quick on the attack with a good defensive
scheme and good goalkeeping. All that said, Melville, for the most part,
looked flat the entire game except for flashes of energy and some
inspiring individuals. Ball movement was plodding, defensive coverage
was often slow and inattentive. Smithtown finished well on their
opportunities and made few unforced errors. Allowing 10 yard shots to
this team is not a good idea. The boys tightened up the D in the second
half but still did not play with the energy we've seen to date.
On the offensive side we seemed to be in search of
something and occasionally resorted to crisp passes and quality shots.
Drew Casino quietly had an outstanding game, winning faceoffs,
scoring goals, starting plays that scored goals, and playing tough
defense. The offense did have many quality shots turned aside by
Smithtown's goalie in an exceptional performance. The score could have
easily been sixteen instead of ten. To be fair, Melville turned it up a
bit in the second half...working for ground balls and creating
turnovers.
It was a good game of lacrosse and maybe an even better
lesson. It's a long season and a lot of people know how to play this
game on Long Island. Work
Hard. Be Prepared.
